چکیده

Acoustic Doppler velocity meters ADVMs provide an alternative to more traditional flow measurement devices and proce dures such as flumes, weirs, and stage rating for irrigation and drainage canals. However, the requirements for correct calibration are extensive and complex. A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics CFD model was used to design a subcritical rapidly varied flow contraction that provides a consistent linear relationship between the upward-looking ADVM sample velocity and the cross-sectional average velocity in order to improve ADVM accuracy without the need for in situ calibration. CFD simulations validated the subcritical contraction in a rectangular and trapezoidal cross section by showing errors within +1.8 and 2.2%. Physical testing of the subcritical contraction coupled with an upward-looking ADVM in a large rectangular flume provided laboratory validation with measurement errors within 4% without calibration. Impact of the Confluence Angle on Flow Field and Flowmeter Accuracy in Open Channel Junctions

Open channel junction is one of the most common hydraulic structures that are used in various practical situations such as sewer, drainage, and flood control systems. Knowing the fluid flow behavior, is one of the most important topics in designing the efficient open channel junctions. The complexity and deviation of flow in the junction’s zone disrupts the proper functioning of the flowmeter d...

Velocity Contour Weighting Method. I: Algorithm Development and Laboratory Testing

An algorithm is developed for real-time estimation of the cross-sectional average velocity of a channel flow by using an upwardlooking pulsed wave acoustic Doppler velocity meters (ADVM). The Velocity Contour Weighting Method (VCWM) is applicable to gradu ally varied flows in prismatic channels and requires little to no calibration. VCWM estimates the average velocity as a weighted average of ...

Shape Effects and Definition of Hydraulic Radius in Manning 's Equation in Open Channel Flow

In the Manning equation the hydraulic radius can be defined as the cross-section dimension of the shape. In pipe flow the bed shear stress is assumed to be uniformly distributed along the wetted perimeter which cannot be true in open channel flow. Hence, three approximation of the true boundary shear-stress distribution are examined and more practical conveyance depth or resistance radius formu...

Assessment of Turbulent Models in Computation of Strongly Curved Open Channel Flows

Several rigorous turbulent models have been developed in the past years and it can be seen that more research is needed to reach a better understanding of their generality and precision by verifying their applications for distinct hydraulic phenomena; under certain assumptions. This survey evaluates the performance of Standard k-ε, Realizable k-ε, RNG k-ε, k-ω and RSM models in predicting flow ...

Experimental analysis of shock waves turbulence in contractions with rectangular sections

Formation of shock waves has an important role in supercritical flows studies. These waves are often occurring during passage of supercritical flow in the non-prismatic channels. In the present study, the effect of length of contraction wall of open-channel for two different geometries (1.5 m and 0.5 m) and fixed contraction ratio was investigated on hydraulic parameters of shock waves using ex...
